My compositions!!!!!!!

Now that I've done 60% of my music management assignment and finished half of my surround mix.... I still can't cut myself some slack.

Every night I lie on the bed thinking about how I am going to manage my time for my near-future assignments, after submitting the work due before term break. And every night when I try to get to sleep I have sudden influx of musical ideas coming to my head. While I contemplated about whether it's a good/bad thing I came across this supplement from DHC called lecithin.

The first decision you've made is the truest decision that you wanted. Within another 2 to 3 secs you'd think about it: weighing options, looking at situations, second-guessing the results, taking other people's opinions into consideration - doing what's right.
Now i really wish that I didn't study in singapore at all.
Decisions change over time. Perhaps that's why we had such stiff educational system back then, because someone who had authority decided that we're too young to make choices, thus basic English, Math, Science and Mother Tongue subjects are the cores. And then there're curricular activities. But that's not enough. I'm deeply affected by the system right now. How lucky now that those children can have the school of the arts as another choice other than the secondary schools.
3 years for a diploma in music & audio technology, a newly crafted course in singapore polytechnic in 2005, was 60% a waste of time. Why didn't they look into the related courses that overseas institutions offer and teach what is being taught in those universities? Was it because they didn't treat it serious enough? It appeared to be more of a music theory/composition course rather than fixing sound itself. So then, don't ever call it music and audio technology! Practical lessons were never long enough. With the number of students we had in the course, 2 classes were way too huge to do sessions, too crowded for everyone to see how the sessions worked, too many people in the studio for each to experience the depth of the sound, for each to listen to the music critically. And most importantly, too few variety of mics. No lessons on essay writing or projects on critical analysis. No tests on frequency shifts or front-back depth critical listening. All we had was music theory tests and stuff like that. Maybe we could have shifted more focus towards the engineering side. For the ones who actually started this course, have they actually considered about these things? Why didn't we have protools installed in every com in the lab, why weren't we taught to logic to record and examine plugins? Cubase is not enough. Why is it that I felt that we could have done more in the first year rather composing and composing? Why is it that I felt that I was not exposed to all kinds of possibilities that could/would happen during sound engineering? I was glad that we had experienced lecturers for this course, but it was not enough. And I thought that it could be a base/foundation for further studies, but it wasn't. 3 damn years were way too long and the ratio of audio engineering to music theory/composition that i have learnt was perhaps 1:3, or even 1:4. Say that I'm biased but I've always preferred audio recording techniques lessons/lecturers to the theory ones. I think that of all modules, Music For Moving Images was the most useful module of them all.

After which, with all the idea I had, 3 years for a bachelor degree in music technology field is too short for me to grasp its essence and practice. It is perhaps all my fault for being too inexperienced and too singaporean. Maybe it's because of the way we're educated back then in schools. All of us should be accountants or do anything that could be solved just by looking and memorising BOOKS. Fuck all those shit. I should've gone overseas since high school.
Then now at this age, I'm going to look forward and say maybe about after 12 to 15 years I could grasp the art of digital audio. I've never felt so lousy before. too late. call me bitter.
I wished that I've never started gaming so intensively during those years that I became obsessed with it, guess I was too immature to handle time back then. I wished that I had a clearer vision of my plans for the future. For now I can only do what I'm capable of, and perhaps one day I can look back and say that this is the job that I've always wanted, and I enjoy working..

i even dreamt that my waist ached because i was driving a really low car with a very low seat that hurts my waist if i were to sit on that seat in the car for too long.
ended up waking with a sore waist.

the other side is occupied by my softy partners.

Creatures who are looking at this part of universe from their galaxies that are billions of light years away from ours might not even know about the existence of earth. And perhaps at this time while you're admiring a star that shines ever so brightly and made a wish upon it, it explodes.

I replied to those who've wished me out of politeness.
Call me apathetic or impassive.. A psychological stirring, the New Year, that is.
While you secretly hope that things would start afresh because it's a turn of the year, using the New Year as an excuse for a time to make up for the procrastinations you've made due to the indecisiveness.
I'm very conscious and mindful of time, even though not in punctuality or so, I love to calculate the number of years that have passed since the movies, which I was watching online, had premiered. It's more of being aware at how time flies and I love to remind myself about events that occurred within those years, and sometimes it gets tiring because I couldn't put an answer or picture while I reminisce. Sometimes I force myself not to care about the time but most of times attempts were in vain.
Oh let this day pass just like any other I have experienced.. quickly, as I advance into the final year of my education.

p.s. someone please keep me entertained and bar me from shopping...!!!!
p.p.s. omg i feel like workin suddenly.. i wanna work!!!! am i too bored? or is it that i'm tired of spending other people's money?!! is the invisible magic pill of 2011 in me igniting?

have been shopping online heavily in ASOS, gmarket, livejournals and online drugstores..
and when they're overpriced i placed them in the cart just to fulfill my wish to own them. then i let time go by and decide whether i'm still in love with them. most of the time i'd forget about them and they go automatically to my wishlist (that i dun even bother to look).

gonna order the last batch of stuff on gmarket in maybe a week or two..
resolution for 2011? wait for huge festive sales and cut down on regular shopping.

bought this recently at borders to satisfy my hunger for this book. i'm still stuck at chapter 3 cuz i feel that i'm unable to absorb all those information exposed to me.. anyway i've read less than half of the book about 3-4 years ago and it sort of went missing in my house in singapore.
two days ago i've decided to get it over here instead of hoping for it to pop out of nowhere back in singapore when i get home. so i carried an excitement to the city and... slightly diverged my route from the bookstore. when i got down to get the book, the store at Myer's and Dymocks didn't have stock.. i kinda carried a grey heart to Borders and hoped for the worst.. and there it is!!! one on the shelf. i've never felt so happy before.. it's like shopping for a miracle. k back to topic.

i remembered 8 years ago, much to my surprise, these questions pop up to me..
who am i?
what am i?
who is the soul inside me?
where do i come from?
is the soul/thing inside me made from something?
how did it come about?
what am I made of?
do i have to do this? what would happen if i did not do it?
why am i having such questions?

i let them spin in my mind for a bit and returned to my daily mundane activities..
4 years later i got hold of Sophie's World, bought by my sis. I read almost anything that kept me interested in the first 3 chapters on the shelf.
i've never felt so.. enlightened before.. maybe 'enlightened' is quite a strong word to use but it was close.
i was so intrigued by the contents and interesting philosophy and i read the book in chunks.. then those chunks took a toll in my brain and i had to stop reading it for a while.. and i sort of casted it somewhere and never found it.
those questions are worse than having to choose between the high-heel boots and the 2cm-heel boots that cass and i contemplated last night with no avail, up till now. i tell you that's a difficult choice to make.

here's some paraphrasing of the content in the book and my thoughts.
Something must have come from something. Is this was true, then it would be never-ending.
So the ultimate something must have come from nothing.
The world is a huge rabbit pulled out of the magician's hat. Every mortal is born on the tip of the rabbit's hair. As they grow up, they slide down into the comfort of the rabbit's inner hairs, and never want to get up to the tip of the hair to see the world again. Philosophers have to climb up and look at the world at a different point of view, and some of them fall. Babies and toddlers once lived at the tip of the rabbit's hair, and in time, slide down to the bottom as they are being taught what is possible, what is not.

bf told me something interesting.
the jap occupation tested on the chinese:
they used a piece of sharp ice and slid across the chinese's wrist, telling him that they were going to use a knife to cut his wrist beforehand. the chinese was not hurt physically but in the end he was dead. he believed what the jap had said.

in the states, a housewife was told that her son was trapped under a truck. she managed to lift the truck up. i feel that limit is something that human sets according to his/her beliefs. in this case the woman believed that she could lift it up to save her child and so she did.
however the world is formed in such a way that, most of us are normal beings who only use a small percentage of our brains. that is why people who are geniuses or have a great talent in something must have defect in some other ways. well that's just a general saying.
and i believe that people create religions because they want something to believe in rather than the nonsense i've typed above. god and stuff.. have you ever thought of the possibility that a noble someone in the ancient era wrote the bible? and that god, the creator of all things is a part of his pen? and that we have so many hundreds of versions of the bible.. why? isn't one version enough? how true is the one that you are reading? why must they edit it? is it because something was 'inaccurate' or 'missing' in the book? who are the authors to judge whether it is inaccurate or not since it was god who wrote the bible himself? is it because they want the followers of the religion to believe in the things that the authors believe? do you go to church because you want something to believe in, to find comfort in and to rely on? same goes to other religions. if they are true, so are the greek myths, putting science aside.

the ultimate being who've "created" the universe must have come from something, or somewhere.
is space nothing? it's just space with no boundaries? is it a circle?
maybe someone out there is playing The Sims?

i read a post about a blind and sick little dog abandoned by the people riding in a car along St Michael's rd.. it was really heartWRENCHING after reading such stories..
i hate watching animals getting murdered/abused online on the internet cuz i think that by watching and sharing encourages more of such things to happen.. knowing about it has already made me sick.. who in the right mind wants to watch it ?
these people are absolutely heartless and not fit to own any living thing!! owning a pet is like marriage.. you take care of it throughout its life no matter it is disabled or bald!!! i hate such irresponsible owners.. i rather irresponsible owners die than their pets!!!
reading that article reminds me to treat tofee better, after scolding her for peeing on the bed..

as far as art and design are concerned, space is often made use of to illustrate wonderful sense of creativity..
maybe i'm used to living in messiness and clutter, i dun really like living in a huge house with too much space in it. it'd be nice to look at, or even staying in it for a day, but not for long. perhaps i'm the cosy type, and most probably due to laziness i dun like to walk dozens of steps with nothing but space around me just to get something to drink.

SAW 3D

so i went to the theatres yesterday to catch my much-awaited movie SAW 3D..
the whole theatre was empty and there're only two of us sitting in the middle watching pieces of flesh strewn towards our faces as i finished my last bit of nachos and cheese.
i know i didn't have to watch the 3D one but there's no timing for the normal one.
i prefer previous episodes to this one, maybe cuz it's time to end the story so it's rather predictable, kinda.
and i just got to know this synth.. which is really the epitome of technology(well much).. and its so compact!! and has a very cute design.. well what do you expect from a jap product?!! love it.

i am an introvert, albeit queer in the way i do things, a tiny whiney little nobody in this world, an average and maybe slightly below average music tech student studying in the conservatorium..
i really admire doug, our very experienced sound engineer, session lecturer at our uni...
so i was waiting for the right time to present my work and i think out of the whole class only 5 out of 25/26 students heard mine.
i attended 2 sessions of his because i wanted to present last.. sigh.. why am i always so nice let others present first.
so i presented to him during the 2nd session, only 2 classmates turned up. doug said he hadn't heard mine since like forever and commented i did a very good job! and so did kim, another musical lecturer said so.. and i think he can't wait to hear mine. HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
the problem, i only did 4.5min out of 10min of my self directed project. GG..
and i need to do my sample project.. that includes composing 5min of requiem for funeral of a hero and 5min of action scene.
the requiem flowed quite well for the first 2min... it was so exasperating to get the chords goin.. so i just did them with trial and errorz.. the last chord was so fucking hard to get.. i tried like 10min then eventually got it... i feel so damn happy when i finally heard the right chords..
sometimes i wish i was mature enough during poly days to compose correctly and use my time wisely. then maybe i''d be 3/4 as pro as some students in class. hehh~~anyway, the course in sp doesn't have the resources i want for my songs.. hello i've got a cool jazz performer for my song in uni! how convenient is that? so much easier workin in a conservatorium than in a normal institution.
man can't wait to do surround sound next sem..

im very positive that there're some expected unforseen negative changes happening my body which im not surprised cuz i haven't been getting my 12h sleep with addition of the radiation of my laptop for the past 3 days researching this rock and pop essay which i have to submit on monday and speaking of it reminds me that i've only written 972/2500 words and that is way too slow because that was done in 12 hours so that means i need another full-blown 24h to complete it nice and neat with the pro-looking references and educational resources on the internet which i have only 4-5 of them and obviously its not enough to spam my pro-ness in writing or rephrasing those stupid facts that eventually i have to reference again in-text but seriously do i have so much time rambling over here because i could've spent this energy used for typing and whining and linking these sentences together searching for more fucking sources for the second cover song of house of the rising sun performed by woody guthrie in the forties which its a bitch to write about because no one gives a flying flying flying and flying fuck about him other than the people living back in the forties to sixties and i dun really have much of a choice to choose another song because i've already found and did so much for those stupid songs so i better continue if not im screwed oh by the way are you still reading cuz if you are you would probably forget what i typed in the front.

busy to update this shit.

i did only 1 meal a day and sometimes half or none for the last couple of weeks.

finally i had a hearty baked rice dinner last night which i will continue to order in future to be one of my meals, and japanese for the other.

i didn't believe in chocolates until recently i found myself starting to snack on Snickers almost everyday, and on that night i was racking my brains into pieces for that stupid mutech essay, i chomped on those cadbury fruit and nut choco bars continuously.

i feel less sad for awhile after those feasts.

somehow i miss the dreary hot weather in singapore. because i get to wear my shorts and tshirt everyday. my clothes from zipia.net arrived but they're there too. now i've only got one tshirt mailed from korea with me.

the sem has finally ended and i can't wait to have my exam. not forgetting another 3000word essay to be handed in.

its not because i have no books at my place so i had to read practical recording techniques while i crapped.
its actually more enjoyable than lookin at hot chicks in magazines..
maybe im startin to become a techie. but im still far from the techies in class.
honestly i rather be a techie than to eat icecream every day.
i think i've found the correct term to describe the problem which was faced during recording of those saxes resulting in producing such nasty frequencies in the mix. its probably due to phase shifting, like when the second wave starts at the 90 deg part of the first wave thus cancelling out some common frequencies they have. the tenor was shit-nasal.

i believe im not the only one who reads techie books while shitting.

after listening to all the studio musicians play saxophones, i feel like learning flugel horn professionally.. call me easily-influenced.
there's a saxophone "slash" in our con. and he played in both our studio projects and sessions.
from the mix you can tell which part he is playing.
its hell lot of a difference from others.
he holds such free yet definitive playing during the solos. i can only hear hesitations and skeptical playing from others.
sometimes the articulation of the playing brings the vibe of the whole piece down. its just really "blehhhhhhhhhhhhh"-ed almost literally..
as usual the phrase shit in, shit out.
the session last night was prompt and i felt that the sax sounds were not full at all.. i suspect there's a tiny bit of phasing issues and there's no room for the instruments to breathe. the project before this was much, much better. its like a whole lot of tonality getting cut off from the horns last night.
so sax slash was playing the alto last night. he made it sound really good even though the sax itself could have sound in a more spacious environment. +1 to him. the bari he played in the previous project was killer.

imagine 5 horn players, 1 guitarist 1 bass player and the drummer crammed up in the studio recording room, the session yesterday. thank god we're marked on how we work not how the mix sound..
i'd be more than glad to record them in a hall than in the studio. live sound from studio? noooooo... yeah thats the theory from the lecturer from studio musicians course.
anyhow, im gonna add it into my portfolio cuz its challenging to mix flat horns =.= and the negligible subs present from the kick, AND the tonking snare. its either the space in the room wasnt enough or the mics were overused.. sm57 shouldnt sound THAT bad on the snare. and its conventional.

thanks to us the bass was DI-ed if not it would bleed into other mics. and so lucky we have an iso-booth to set the guitar amp in.
and we're missing a M88 from our studio.. apparently 421 was not good enough to capture the baritone. ban 3525s for recording saxes.
i was falling asleep during the session last night especially when it comes to the vocals. at the end when they were clipping. no one seemed to notice it when i looked the preamp the meter was swinging to red frequently. maybe im more awake while i was dozing off. zz.

i really dont have the mood to do protools project.
